Jazz Fest Bottle Share

I love trying new beer, even if I only get a few ounces. Sometimes, that’s all you need, especially for the higher ABV beers. No one needs a full glass of an 18% beer. And if I want to try a lot of beers, then a bottle share or beer tasting is perfect for that. This is the first one I’ve attended since moving to New Orleans and it certainly did not disappoint. I met some new beer-minded people and hopefully will be able to get together with them in the future.

While I can’t taste the subtleties of some things, like a hint of coriander or hibiscus, I do know what I like-IPAs and most things in a barrel.

Mostly everything from this night was new to me and I’ve included pictures from some of the highlights.

A vertical/horizontal of various eclipse beers. Very tasty. My favorite was either the 2011 Four Roses barrel or the 2011 Elijah Craigs 12-year barrel.

Crooked Stave-this was a batch 1 beer. I’m just starting to get into sours and this was delicious.

Also had several sours from Russian River which were pretty badass. More sours, please.

The king of the night was Grey Monday. It’s a Black Tuesday base with hazelnuts. My god, this beer was fantastic. Seriously really good. Even the wax coating smelled like hazelnuts. It’s the little things, people. It’s one of the best beers I’ve tried to date and it’s well worth trying to get your hands on one of these.

Even though I miss my tasting group in Atlanta, I had a great time meeting new people. And of course, drinking all the beer. ALL THE BEER.

New Beer Town, New Orleans

I recently moved to New Orleans from Atlanta. Recently being about 6 months ago. It’s already exciting being in a new city. And as a lover of beer, it’s an opportunity to be able to get beers that aren’t distributed in the Atlanta area. At first, I was a little disappointed-no Founders, Bells, New Holland, Bruery, Dogfish Head, etc. I couldn’t believe my bad luck in moving to a state where the beer distribution has such a low variety. It’s not all bad and things are getting better. There isn’t a cap on ABV and this state get Prairie, Cantillon, 3F, Pretty Little Things, etc. Louisiana just got New Belgium (not crazy, but it’s something) and will be getting Southern Tier very soon. NOLA, Parish, and Tin Roof Brewing are solid locals that are nice alternatives to Sweet Water, Red Brick, and Terrapin.

A huge plus for New Orleans is Avenue Pub-a bar that’s known for its whiskey almost as much as its beer selection. And it rivals Brickstore and Porter in many ways.

Okay, now that the informative-type stuff is over, let’s get to the fun stuff, like actually drinking beer. I figure this shouldn’t just be about the local beer scene, but other beer things going on as well. For instance, just celebrated my 3rd year anniversary with beers related to the number three. We had Cuir, Bruery 3rd year anniversary; Stingo, Boulevard’s collaboration number 3; Luchador en Fuego, Clown Shoes 3rd anniversary beer; and Melange 3, Bruery blend of three beers. All of the beers were great, but the stand-out was the Melange 3. A huge, well balanced, delicious beer. Drink ‘em if ya got ‘em.

Hopefully, soon to come, I’ll have pics of tastings and cool beer happenings. Maybe a review or two. The former is more likely. My tongue is biased and I honestly don’t pick up on really subtle flavors. I appreciate and like what I like—which happens to be pretty much anything except wheats, lagers, and ambers with an affinity for IPAs and things in a barrel. It is what it is.

New Beer Post!

I have been neglecting my writing and beer duties on this blog for the last couple months. Not that a million people read this blog or anything, but I’ll apologize anyway. I have been busy though. I have a big boy job now and I’ve had something going on every weekend this summer, like floating down the Hooch several times. A must. Do it. Not only have I gotten to try some great beers this summer, I’ve gotten to hang out with some great beer folk.

But for the pics above, or below, or wherever the pics are, one is from a really solid trade I landed. The second is a haul from South Carolina, specifically the Charleston Beer Exchange. And the third is from a recent beer tasting at the Porter Beer Bar in Atlanta that I was lucky enough to be a part of. And yes, I ended a sentence in ‘of.’ And I did it again.

Next beer adventure? Madison, WI and only 40 minutes from New Glarus.

Next blog posting? Sooner than that. I’m sure I’ll be re-posting some GIFs and/or music videos.
